Using the Milestone Grade Calculation for calculated grade items

Calculated grade items display users' cumulative achievement across multiple grade items and grade item categories. Milestone Grade Calculation uses the maximum cumulative weight or points of the completed grade items as the denominator to determine a calculated grade item's score.

A calculated grade item with Milestone Grade Calculation is a good method for providing a course interim grade calculation, and for analyzing how specific grade items contribute to an overall score.

Note  You can only create calculated grade items that use a Milestone Grade Calculation if your grading system is set to Weighted. See Changing Calculation Options for more information.

Examples of Milestone Grade Calculation

Example 1  A calculated grade item in a Weighted grading system with individual grade items and a weighted category. The Grade Calculations setting for ungraded items is set to Drop ungraded items. This example contains two ungraded grade items.

Grade items and categories (Weight 100) Achievement Milestone Grade Calculation

Grade Item A (Weight 20):

  • Score 18/20

Grade Item A achieved weight:

(18/20)
= 0.9
0.9 * 20 = 18

(Sum of achieved weight for Grade Items A, B, C, and Category 1) / (Sum of graded items' max possible weight):

(18 + 8 + 20) / (20 + 20 + 20)

= 46/60 (76.66%)

Grade Item B (Weight 20):

  • Score 8/20

Grade Item B achieved weight:

(8/20)
= 0.4
0.4 * 20 = 8

Grade Item C (Weight 20):

  • Score ungraded /20

Category 1 (Weight 40):

  • Grade Item D:
    • Weight 50% (20/40, 0.5)
    • Score 10/10
  • Grade Item E:
    • Weight 50% (20/40, 0.5)
    • Score ungraded /10

Category 1 achieved weight:

0.5*(10/10)
= 0.5
0.5 * 40 = 20

Example 2  A calculated grade item in a Weighted grading system with individual grade items and a weighted category. The Grade Calculations setting for ungraded items is set to Treat ungraded items as 0. This example is similar to Example 1 except it contains two grade items treated as 0.

Grade items and categories (Weight 100) Achievement Milestone Grade Calculation

Grade Item A (Weight 20):

  • Score 18/20

Grade Item A achieved weight:

(18/20)
= 0.9
0.9 * 20 = 18

(Sum of achieved weight for Grade Items A, B, C, and Category 1) / (Sum of graded items' max possible weight):

(18 + 8 + 20) / (20 + 20 + 20 + 40)

= 46/100 (46%)

Grade Item B (Weight 20):

  • Score 8/20

Grade Item B achieved weight:

(8/20)
= 0.4
0.4 * 20 = 8

Grade Item C (Weight 20):

  • Score 0/20

Category 1 (Weight 40):

  • Grade Item D:
    • Weight 50% (20/40, 0.5)
    • Score 10/10
  • Grade Item E:
    • Weight 50% (20/40, 0.5)
    • Score 0/10

Category 1 achieved weight:

0.5*(10/10)
= 0.5
0.5 * 40 = 20

Example 3  A calculated grade item in a Weighted grading system with weighted categories. The Grade Calculations setting for ungraded items is set to Drop ungraded items. This example contains one ungraded grade item.

Category 1 (Weight 40):

    • Weight 50% (20/40, 0.5)
    • Score 20/20
  • Grade Item B
    • Weight 50% (20/40, 0.5)
    • Score 8/20

Category 1 achieved weight:

0.5*(20/20 + 8/20)
= 0.7
0.7 * 40 = 28

(Sum of achieved weight for Category 1 and Category 2) / (Sum of graded items' max possible weight):

(28 + 33.6) / (20 + 20 + +24 + 24 + 12)

= 61.6/76 (81.05%)

Category 2 (Weight 60):

  • Grade Item C:
    • Weight 40% (24/60, 0.4)
    • Score 10/10
  • Grade Item D:
    • Weight 40% (24/60, 0.4)
    • Score ungraded /10
  • Grade Item E:
    • Weight 20% (12/60, 0.2)
    • Score 8/10

Category 2 achieved weight:

0.4*(10/10) + 0.2*(8/10)
= 0.56
0.56 * 60 = 33.6
