RSS for learning object repositories

You can subscribe to RSS feeds in Learning Repository. There are three types of RSS feeds available:

About repository RSS feeds

Repository RSS feeds provide notification support for workflow updates in local and harvested repositories. Repository feeds update when any of the following events occur:

RSS feeds save time for users that manage learning object repositories and support efficient workflows. For example, content control specialists receive immediate notification of new publications to review versus spending time checking a repository for new learning objects.

Subscribe to a repository RSS feed

  1. Click LOR on the navbar, or click the Learning Repository (LOR) widget on My Home or Course Home if it is available.
  2. On the LOR Search page, click RSS Feeds.
  3. Click the repository you want to receive notifications about.
  4. Select how you want to receive RSS feed notifications from the drop-down list and click Subscribe Now.
  5. Follow the application's prompts to activate the notifications.
  6. Repeat steps 2-4 for any additional repositories you want to subscribe to.

About browse path RSS feeds

Browse path RSS feeds help you keep track of new learning objects published to classifications of your interest.

You can choose the degree to which your feeds are specialized, dependent on the granularity of the classifications specified by your institution. See Browsing an LOR's content for information on browsing.

Subscribe to a browse path RSS feed

  1. Click LOR on the navbar, or click the Learning Repository (LOR) widget on My Home or Course Home if it is available.
  2. On the LOR Search page, click RSS Feeds.
  3. Click the browse path feed you want to subscribe to.
  4. Select how you want to receive RSS feed notifications from the drop-down list and click Subscribe Now.
  5. Follow the application's prompts to activate the notifications.
  6. Repeat steps 2-4 for any additional browse path feeds you want to subscribe to.

About collection RSS feeds

Collection RSS feeds help you keep track of learning objects that have been added to collections that interest or impact you.

Subscribe to a collection's RSS feed

  1. Click LOR on the navbar, or click the Learning Repository (LOR) widget on My Home or Course Home if it is available.
  2. Click Search to find the collection.
    • Click the Advanced Search link to limit your results only to collections: under Search Restrictions, select Collections from the Type drop-down list.
  3. On the LOR Results page, click the collection's name.
  4. Click the View [collection's] RSS feed icon below the collection's title.
  5. Select how you want to receive notifications from the drop-down list and click Subscribe Now.
  6. Follow the application's prompts to activate the notifications.
  7. Repeat steps 1-3 for any additional collection feeds you want to subscribe to.

Enabling RSS feeds

You might need to set several DOME configuration variables to enable RSS feeds for your system.

Enable RSS feeds

  1. Click DOME in the Admin Tools widget, or from the Admin Tools menu on the minibar.
  2. Enable the following DOME variables:
    • d2l.Tools.LOR.RSS.AllowBrowsePathRSS
    • d2l.Tools.LOR.RSS.AllowRepositoryRSS
    • d2l.Tools.LOR.RSS.AllowCollectionRSS

Limiting the amount of items in a feed

If you want to limit how many items appear in your RSS feed, configure this DOME variable. The default value is 25 items.

Limit the number of items in a feed

  1. Click DOME in the Admin Tools widget, or from the Admin Tools menu on the minibar.
  2. Configure the DOME variable: d2l.Tools.LOR.RSS.MaxFeedItems.
