Creating captions in post-production

After you publish a CaptureCast presentation to Capture Portal or Capture Central, you can add closed captions to provide users the option to view your presentation with an audio transcription.

  1. Add closed captions with the Producer tool
  2. Creating and adding SRT files
  3. Requesting captions from CaptionSync

Add closed captions with the Producer tool

Note  If you want to include an SRT file in addition to captions you create in Producer, you must upload the SRT file first. If you upload an SRT file after you create captions in Producer, the file will overwrite your existing captions.

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Log in to Capture Portal and click Admin.
    • In Learning Environment, click Capture Central on your course navbar.
  2. In the Manage Content area's On-Demand section, click Manage Presentations.
  3. Click the Post-Production icon.
  4. Click the Closed Captions tab.
  5. Click the Add a new caption icon to open the Caption area.
  6. Enter your caption in the Title field. As you enter text, the text displays in your captions list.
  7. Select the Time to adjust when the caption appears in the presentation. You can click the Set time to current playback position icon to add the caption to the presentation's current playback position.
  8. Click Save. Repeat steps 2-5 to continue adding captions.

Creating and adding SRT files

An SRT file is a .srt extension file that contains a formatted plain text list of timecodes (HH:MM:SS,MIL) matched with subtitles. Each item on the list is numbered sequentially starting with 1. You can create your own SRT file with a plain text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit, and save the file with extension .srt. The following is a .srt file example:

1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:07,000
Hello, welcome to this CaptureCast presentation.

2
00:00:07,050 --> 00:00:12,000
Today I will be speaking about changes in eLearning technology.

3
00:00:12,050 --> 00:00:20,000
This is a thirty minute seminar. If you wish, you may take notes during this presentation.

Requesting captions from CaptionSync

CaptionSync is a web-based solution that generates captions for CaptureCast presentations. It is a paid service your institution can set up between Desire2Learn Capture and Automatic Sync Technologies. After a captions request is processed, CaptionSync requires 1-3 business days to create captions for your presentation.

Request captions from CaptionSync

  1. Do one of the following:
    • Log in to Capture Portal and click Admin.
    • In Learning Environment, click Capture Central on your course navbar.
  2. In the Manage Content area's On-Demand section, click Manage Presentations.
  3. Click on the presentation you want to request captions for.
  4. In the Automatic Caption Generation section, select the source audio language from the drop-down list. This is the language you want to display in captions.
  5. Note  If you cannot see the Automatic Caption Generation section, contact your Capture administrator for support to ensure CaptionSync is available and enabled for Capture Central or your Capture Portal.

  6. CaptionSync turnaround time is approximately 1-3 business days. If your request for captions is urgent, select the Rush service check box.
  7. Note  Due to a higher fee for Rush service requests, it is at your Capture administrator's discretion to accept or deny your request.

  8. Click Request captions.
  9. Once the request processes, you will receive an email to indicate if your request is accepted or denied by your Capture administrator. If your captions request is accepted, you will also receive an email once the captions are created (captions appear within your presentation) and you can view it from Capture Portal or Capture Central.
